Which One Fits? — Choosing Between A / An / The

🔹 What Are Articles?
Articles are small words we use before nouns. They tell us if something is general or specific.
There are 3 main articles: A, An, The.
In Tounsi: Articles houma kelmat sghira tji 9bal el ism (noun). Y3awnouna nfa9dou knesh menhom haja ma3roufa (specific) wela ay haja (general).

When to use them?

  • A → Before words that begin with a consonant sound.
    Example: a car, a banana, a house
    Ex Tounsi: “a car” = sayara ayya wahda
  • An → Before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
    Example: an apple, an umbrella, an idea
    Ex Tounsi: “an apple” = touffa7a ayya wahda (wahed menhom)
  • The → When you talk about something specific or already known.
    Example: the sun, the teacher, the blue car
    Ex Tounsi: “the teacher” = el m3allem ma3rouf chkon howa

Spot the Article — Identifying & Fixing Mistakes

🔹 Common Errors:
- Using “the” when the thing is not specific
- Using “a/an” when the thing is already known
In Tounsi: Ken tkoul “the” lazem el 7aja tkoun ma3roufa. Ken t7eb tkoul 7aja ayya wahda, sta3mel “a” wela “an”.

Correct Examples:

  • ❌ I saw the cat in the street. (Which cat?)
    ✅ I saw a cat in the street. (Any cat)
  • ❌ I need an phone.
    ✅ I need a phone. (P = consonant sound)
  • ❌ I bought a orange that we talked about.
    ✅ I bought the orange that we talked about. (Specific orange)

Definite or Not? — Specific vs. General Use

🔹 Definite = “The”
We use the when we mean a specific person/thing.
Example: The book on the table is mine.
→ We know which book.
🔹 Indefinite = “A / An”
We use a / an when we don’t mean a specific one.
Example: I want to buy a book.
→ Any book, not specific.
In Tounsi:
- “The” = el 7aja ma3roufa → “el ktab 3ala ettawla.”
- “A / An” = ay 7aja → “n7eb nchri ktab.”

  • The doctor you recommended was great. (Specific)
